Future proof climate commitments, is South Africa ambitious enough?

Webinar

This SACAN and Greenpeace Africa webinar examines where parties of the UNFCCC’s COP stand as they submit their revised commitments to reversing anthropogenic climate change. Panellists will provide perspectives from parties across the globe who have already submitted their revised NDC. We will then take a glance at South Africa’s revised draft NDC, released on 31 March 2021; stakeholder engagements are set to commence in April. Finally, civil society has done its own analysis of what is required by South Africa to remain on target.

In advance of COP 21 in Paris in 2015, South Africa submitted its (Intended) Nationally Determined Contribution ((I)NDC) to the UNFCCC, which identifies South Africa’s intention that emissions should follow a Peak Plateau and Decline (PPD) trajectory, peaking in 2025, plateauing for approximately a decade before an absolute decline by 2050. In September 2020, the Cabinet approved the establishment of the Presidential Climate Change Commission (PCCC), which held its first meeting in February 2021.

SACAN and Greenpeace Africa bring together a webinar to look at where we stand as parties of the UNFCCC’s COP submit their revised commitments to reversing anthropogenic climate change. We will have panelists to give perspectives from parties around the globe who have already submitted their revised NDC. Then we will take a glance at South Africa’s revised draft NDC that was released on the 31st of March 2021 and the stakeholder engagements are set to commence in April. Finally, civil society has done its own analysis of what is required by South Africa to remain on target.
