Short Learning Programme – Online Instructor-Led Course

Course Objective: The Short Learning Programme (SLP) intends to provide skill oriented learning in GIS applications in the built environment field. The course will also expose the participants to free and open-source software, open-standards and open data enabling them to implement the solutions discussed in the course at their own organizations.
Thematic Areas: The course comprises of online contact sessions and assignment engagements spread over four weeks. Around 24 hours of sessions comprise of lecture and discussion sessions and 26 hours of lab exercises/ practical hands on session across selected thematic areas of Solid Waste Management, Crime Prevention and Safety, Spatial Planning, Land Use Management, Transportation, and Urban Infrastructure/ Utilities using GIS applications.
Course Duration: 4 Weeks (Online)
Course Delivery: The course is facilitated through online learning platform of University of Johannesburg. The course involves online lectures, practical GIS exercises, assignments, discussions, quizzes and project. The lab exercises will be conducted using world’s most popular open-source GIS software QGIS – which is used across government and private organizations globally.
Target Group: The course is essentially targeted to professionals and researchers in the built environment field such as Town/ Urban and Regional Planners, Development Practitioners, Urban / Municipal Managers, Urban Researchers, Geographers, practitioners of similar professional fields who are interested to further their knowledge and skills in GIS field.
Eligibility: Candidates must have completed at least a National Diploma qualification in Town/Urban and Regional Planning or similar minimum qualification in other fields of Geography, Development Studies, Public Governance, Civil Engineering/ Technology, Environmental Sciences, and other related disciplines of the Built Environment sector.
Certification: Certificate of participation would be issued to participants on successful course completion.
