Remembering our relationship with water

October 14, 2020 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Remembering our relationship with water

As the current water crisis in cities and towns across the country unfolds, we yet again face threats of “Day Zeros” and “State of Disasters” being declared, as well as expectations of an ensuing blame game. There are undoubtedly multiple factors that are contributing to this water crisis and we can blame climate change, drought, lack of infrastructure maintenance and funding challenges, municipal incompetence or lack of proper planning and general system failures. The list can be endless. What we often fail to consider though, is that we as humans, as citizens, communities, and consumers, have negated and forgotten our relationship with water and this lack of memory, this ecological amnesia, has negatively impacted our treatment of and connection with water. We have taken it for granted, polluted it, wasted it, and systemically abused it. We easily pass the buck of our stewardship onto municipal councils and the government in general. Our memories need some refreshing.
