Sustainable Cities Seminar
December 1, 2020 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am
09:00 – 11:00 SUSTAINABLE CITIES SEMINAR
Only a small percentage of the carbon emissions driving climate change emanate from African, but African countries are disproportionately vulnerable to climate shocks like flooding, erosion, drought and heat stress. These risks are especially prevalent in African cities. Hard surfaces give rise to flooding and concrete and asphalt radiate heat exacerbated by a lack of green spaces. These climate stresses will be compounded as the urban population continues to expand, with Africa’s towns and cities predicted to receive another billion inhabitants by 2050. This pressure has put African countries into the hot seat, with cities in the vanguard of the struggle to reduce climate risk.
