Call for abstracts: African Urbanisms Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS FOR THE AFRICAN URBANISMS CONFERENCE OPEN UNTIL APRIL 21

Dear colleagues,
The call for papers for the African Urbanisms conference organised by the Wits-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab is still open until April 21. The conference will take place from October 23 to October 26, 2024 in Johannesburg, South Africa, hosted by the School of Architecture and Planning at the University of the Witwatersrand.

The conference will explore the multiplicity of interlinked African urbanisms as a starting point to question the status quo of urban policies and planning paradigms, to seek transformative practices that present alternatives to “business as usual” urban development, and to imagine alternative urban futures. Therefore, the conference will bring together work at different scales, exploring a variety of urbanisation experiences and responses to challenges African cities are facing. The opening keynote will be held by Prof Shuaib Lwasa (ISS, Erasmus University Rotterdam).

You can find all the sessions open to presentation proposals organised in three thematic streams Critical Engagements, Transformative Practices, and Alternative Futures on the conference website. Abstracts can be uploaded under each session. Please use the template provided for your submissions. If you consider submitting a contribution, please carefully read the instructions on the conference website. The call will close on April 21, 2024.

The conference will be in-person and participation will be free of charge.

For any enquiries about the conference, please contact Africanurbanisms.SOAP@wits.ac.za.

Please share the call widely among your networks! We are looking forward to your contributions!
