Abstract

This chapter analyzes the economic structure of the City of Gondar. It tries to provide answers to some important questions related to the economy of Gondar, specifically, the sources of income and employment for the city, the diversity of the economy, and the prospect of meeting future growth. Based on data from the Central Statistical Agency and the survey from the Municipality of Gondar, the chapter identifies the important economic sectors of the region and analyzes the magnitude of the problems of unemployment and poverty in Gondar and the surrounding regions. The chapter also illustrates how one can use the economic base, shift-share, and impact analysis techniques (I/O) as tools to analyze the economic structure of a region.
