Abstract

This chapter focuses on land use and housing in the City of Gondar. Shortage of housing and scarcity of land for building homes are among the critical problems that the municipality of Gondar is facing. Both problems were aggravated as a result of the country’s unsustainable land tenure systems inherited from the socialist government of the Derg era. The chapter also provides illustrations on how one can project different types of land use, e.g., residential land use, for future development. Housing and the availability of affordable housing are the other major problems that the city is facing. Many cities in Ethiopia including Gondar were impacted by the 1975 nationalization of urban land and extra homes by the socialist government of the Derg. The nationalization effectively eliminated the private sector from participating in the construction of homes.
