Abstract
The thematic focus of Part I of this book is urban form, accessibility and travel. In this overview chapter, a brief discussion of the conceptual understanding of the relationship between urban land use and transportation systems is presented to set the context for three case studies presented in Part I of the book. Together, the three case study chapters address the following fundamental questions in the context of African cities: How are the various land use activities that constitute opportunities or valued destinations distributed? What transportation options exist to provide connectivity to opportunities? How do the existing land use and transportation systems combine to shape differential access to valued destinations?
