University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)
From the late 1960s until 1973 Natal University offered a part-time, post graduate degree in Town and Regional Planning. The programme was located in the Department of Civil Engineering. The course was later discontinued and a new, two-year, full-time Master of Town and Regional Planning (MTRP) programme was instituted in 1975.
The first contingent of students (six) started in 1976 and graduated with Master of Town and Regional Planning (MTRP) degrees in April 1978.
The existing programme that is currently accredited with the South African Council for Planners (SACPLAN) is the Master of Town and Regional Planning (MTRP) degree.
The MTRP is a generalist degree that allows the graduate to move between specialisations and develop her/his career accordingly.
