University of Pretoria (UP)
Town and Regional Planning education at the University of Pretoria dates back more than 60 years ago to the year 1959, when a postgraduate programme in the discipline was introduced in the then Department of Land surveying. An undergraduate programme followed in 1969.
In 1998, the Department became part of the School for the Built Environment, together with Department of Architecture and Construction Economics, in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (EBIT).
The Department of Town and Regional Planning strives to provide equitable and sustainable development of people through:
- Accredited undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in urban and regional planning as professional qualifications. These programmes provide learners with the competencies to plan, implement and manage innovative and integrated interventions in urban and regional spaces affected by fragmentation and inequalities, globalisation, cultural changes, local and regional economic dynamics, and technological advances.
- Active and constructive involvement of students and lecturers in community development and service.
- Academically rigorous and socially relevant research conducted by students and lecturers.
- Consulting projects in cooperation with local, provincial and national government as well as the private sector.
- Accredited continued professional development (CPD) opportunities for planning professionals.
