Abstract

This chapter presents the geographical–historical background of the city of Praia, emphasizing the role of the initial town of Praia in the context of the administrative district of Alcatrazes, of which it was part in the beginning. With the loss of importance of the first Cape Verdean city—Ribeira Grande de Santiago, Praia became gradually the main urban centre in the island of Santiago. The chapter also provides an overview of the urban evolution of Praia and a critical analysis of the challenges for urban governance of the current expansion of the city.
